ITINERARY

ZAMBIA - 15 DAYS WITH DR. LIVINGSTONE

The Victoria Falls – Mosi Oa Tunya “The smoke that thunders”. One of the most memorable and spectacular sights in the world. Walk in the Footsteps of Dr. David Livingstone who discovered the falls in 1855. In his journal he wrote; It is the most wonderful site I have ever witnessed in Africa – “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”.

Today the tourist industry has styled Livingstone and the Victoria Falls as the “Adventure Capital” of Africa.

Between its source in the north-western tip of the country and the Victoria Falls, the Zambezi river grows from a trickle to one of the mightiest rivers on the continent. Although its traditional heart has always been the fertile plains annually flooded by the Zambezi, the ancient kingdom of Barotseland cover almost the entire region. From the source of the Zambezi we visit the Kafue Flats which annually flooded by the Kafue River results in an enormous wetland habitat and wildlife paradise.

Day 1:
Meet at Livingstone and travel the 230km west along the Zambezi to Sakazima Island Lodge. [S 017 17 49.2; E 024 09 10.5] [953m]
Sakazima Island Lodge is built on an island in the Zambezi river and offers lodge and camping accommodation, fishing, birding and excellent rest to the exhausted traveller.

Day 2: (190km)
We start our safari with spectacular views of the Zambezi on our right. We visit the Sioma falls, then cross the Zambezi at Sitoti with a ferry and camping Senanga enjoying a lovely sunset over the Barotse floodplain.

Day 3: (350km)
Visit the fishing village at Mongu, stock with some Mosi’s and head for Lukulu and the Watopa ferry. We have a bush camp and will be entertained with good music by our special “hosts”.

Day 4: (290km)
Past the town of Zambezi to Chavuma where the Zambezi comes out of Angola, visit the suspension bridge, camp next to the Zambezi and you can take spectacular photographs at sunset.

Day 5: (320km)
Back to Mumbeji and at Kabompo we have to buy forest honey. On to the remote West Lunga National Park where we camp and search for the golden long hair baboons.

Day 6: (200km)
Double back to Manyinga and then north where your four wheel driving skill will be put to the test. We camp and the chance of elephant visitors is good.

Day 7: (180km)
An early start will have us in Mwinilunga around midday. We head west for another hour and then search for a pool of water that drain over the leaf strewn ground on its first passage to become that mighty river. What a moment and it calls for celebration.

Day 8: (120km)
Explore the area further north to Kalene Hill, meet the descendants of the pioneer missionary, Dr Walter Fisher. And it is amazing o think that the source of the huge Congo River is only a few kilometres away.

Day 9: (460km)
Better road conditions will have us early afternoon via Solwezi for supplies and then to visit the well known Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage.

Day 10: (550km)
A long days drive through Zambia’s Copperbelt, past the town of Kasempa, follow a hidden track and then enter Kafue National Park for our first of many lion roars.

Day 11 – 14: (500km)
We explore the Busanga Plains, be entertained by the Lufupa hippos, fish in the Kafue river, track down to Kafue’s Ngoma Sector, search for cheetah and enjoy excellent wildlife in not only the oldest of Zambia’s park but also the largest and one of the largest on the continent.

Day 15: (300km)
We leave the Nanzhila Plains south to Livingstone and appreciate the “smoke that thunder” from what started as a clear little fountain. Enjoy a last night of camping next to the Zambezi River.

Thanks Dr. Livingstone for 150 years back!

It is worthwhile to stay over in Livingstone and loin some of the adrenalin pumping adventure activities on the rushing waters of the mighty Zambezi.
